Dr. Shannon Terry

As an educational leader, Dr. Shannon Terry’s diverse professional experiences at the national, state, and local levels have resulted in a deep understanding of urban school systems leading to positive student outcomes.  Highly engaged in the innovation and transformation space, she leverages her knowledge and expertise to design schools and educational programs that reflect a mind for the future with the future in mind.  Shannon enjoys leading and contributing to multiple efforts as a thought partner, inviting opportunities at every turn to engage with, respond to, and influence the larger political, social, and cultural context.  As the Executive Director of Professional and Digital Learning for the Dallas Independent School District (Texas), Shannon is responsible for leading all aspects of professional learning, digital learning and library media services.  She acts as a key strategist for systemwide continuous improvement leading complex change management efforts.  Her colleagues and audiences describe her as “a true change leader skilled at energizing groups and challenging the status quo”.  Previous to Dr. Terry’s current role, she served the educational communities of Arlington (TX), Garland (TX) and Fort Worth (TX) in different capacities, including Director of Professional Learning; Director of Bilingual/ESL Programs; Assistant Director/Assistant Principal for the International Newcomer Academy; Adjunct Professor at Texas Woman’s University; Curriculum Specialist; Parent Educator; Kindergarten Teacher; and Fifth Grade Teacher. She has also served as a national consultant with Modern Red Schoolhouse leading comprehensive school reform and equity work in urban districts across the United States, and more recently with Envision Learning Partners located in California.  Dr. Terry represents Dallas ISD as co-chair of the Professional Learning Design Committee working with Southern Methodist University and the Toyota USA Foundation to build a STEM Model School in West Dallas. Dr. Terry participates on multiple, national level cohorts, including the Deeper Learning Leadership Forum (DLLF) as a Flora Hewlett Packard Foundation grant recipient; the International Society of Technology in Education (ISTE) as a Technical Work Group member, Professional Learning Network leader, and Community Champion; the Learning Counsel Advisory Group as a congress member; and The Futures Institute as a delegate.  She was the proud recipient of the Learning Forward Patsy Hochman Scholarship and recently graduated from the prestigious Learning Forward Academy.  She is a published author, blogger and a self-proclaimed “Twitter-holic”.  Dr. Terry possesses a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership, Master of Bilingual Education, and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish. Her educator certifications, issued by the State Board of Education in Texas, include Mid-management (All Levels), Elementary (PK-8), and Bilingual Education (PK-6) certifications. In Fall 2021, she will complete all of the requirements set forward by the Texas State Board of Educator Certification to obtain Superintendent Certification.  Shannon married her high school sweetheart, James.  They have two adult children.  Their daughter, Autumn, is a NICU nurse in Dallas.  Their son, John-Charles, is an Animal Science major at Texas Tech University.
