Laura Hess is the Executive Director of Special Education for St. Vrain Valley Schools, located in Longmont, Colorado. Home to more than 32,000 of Colorado’s students, St. Vrain is the seventh largest school district in the state and operates 57 schools and programs that are spread over 411 square miles. Laura has worked in the field of special education for more than 15 years, holding teaching and leadership positions in California, Illinois, and Colorado. She currently sits on the Special Education Directors Leadership Team for the Colorado Department of Education, and is pursuing an Ed.D. focused in Special Education from Concordia University Chicago.
Laura is passionate about instructional coaching as it relates to teacher retention in hard-to-fill areas. In 2018, Laura was asked to speak at the Council for Special Education Administrators on the topic of instructional coaching. She enjoys coaching teachers who are new to teaching and new to the field of special education, utilizing a systematic approach that ensures teacher success as they work with students with disabilities.
